A week is a long time…

…in politics, so they say. Well it’s certainly eventful. Liz Truss has secured her place in the history books as the UK’s shortest serving Prime Minister (in terms of duration, not height). Forty four days, ten of which were spent with no government business due to the Queen’s funeral.

Imagine! The poor Queen reigned for more than seven decades and her last act as Monarch was to shake hands with a political mayfly. I do hope Ms Truss’ brevity wasn’t contagious and hastened the monarch’s departure. Ms Truss’ farwell speech was also brief and conspicuously devoid of any admission of culpability for the wreckage she and her GCSE standard chancellor managed to wreak.

She was centre stage for a time, which is what she wanted, but one has to remember that so was Samson, and look what happened when the spotlight was on him.

Now it looks like Boris the Blowhard might be bumbling back from the Bahamas for another waddling run at the golden ring. Utter disaster of course to let that man near anything requiring a greater degree of responsibility than the TV remote control, but look at the competition! He’d surrounded himself with such a collection of weak-chinned and spineless second raters (as aspiring Tyrants always do) and now these yapping handbag-dogs are the ones competing.

Bring back politicians with commitment. Hellfire I despised Margaret Thatcher and her ilk for their policies but at least you felt they believed in the oppressive nonsense they were foisting on the country. This current mob (and I include the opposition!) all seem to thrive on watered down platitudes, personality politics and pabulum.

Idea for Christmas: A Front-Bench Advent calendar. Each morning the family can gather round and eagerly open today’s little door to see a picture of whoever is taking a senior ministerial position that day. Plus a little bit of chocolate to take away the sour taste.
